Sage 100 and Starship Slowdown With Server 2016 or 2019

August 10, 2021 by Wayne Schulz

Slow Printing Performance on Server 2016 and 2019 with StarShip installed

There is a pesky bug that just appeared on the Sage KB. While we have not taken reports of this yet, you may want to make note of the issue if you use Sage 100 alongside the popular V-Technologies Starship shipping software.

According to this Sage KB, once Starship is installed on Microsoft Windows Server 2016 or 2019, and users begin printing anything, whether Sage 100 related or outside of Sage 100, they may notice explorer.exe is creating individual threads for each user at login under different PID’s, and then consuming 100% CPU between all these threads.

*This appears to occur around 15 – 30 minutes after 4+ users log in and begin working. Even if all the explorer.exe processes are killed, the issue re-occurs within 15 – 45 mins

Sage believes that the issue is related to StarShip using FabulaTech for print job port redirections and the performance issue is believed to be caused by FabulaTech’s ftusbprint.dll

*Note – Only Server 2016 and 2019 seem to be affected. Server 2012 does not appear to be affected

Sage Engineering is currently aware of the issue. Both Starship and FabulaTech have also been made aware of the problem and are expected to address the issue.

Why You May Need To Upgrade Your Starship Server

March 2, 2016 by Wayne Schulz

V-Technologies, the publisher of the popular Starship shipping software for Sage 100 has issued the following advisory regarding the possible need to update your Starship server to ensure compatibility with the latest encryption technologies.

UPS and FedEx security updates are impacting the StarShip Server Minimum System Requirements! OnTrac, Estes and Old Dominion have also made security changes.
The updated requirements reflect the move from SHA-1 encryption to the new and more secure industry standards of SHA-256 (SHA-2) encryption and TLS protocol.

Simply stated, older operating systems will no longer be able to communicate with any carriers once they finalize their move to SHA-2 and TLS 1.2.

Does this affect me?
Specifically, if your StarShip Server is running on:

  • Windows Server 2003
  • Windows XP
  • Windows Server 2008
  • Windows Vista

you should plan to upgrade to one of the following compatible operating systems:

  • Windows Server 2012R2
  • Windows Server 2012
  • Small Business Server 2011
  • Windows Server 2008R2 SP1
  • Windows 10
  • Windows 8
  • Windows 7 SP1

Upgrading Starship During Your Sage 100 ERP Upgrade

September 4, 2013 by Wayne Schulz

Wondering how you can upgrade and test your company’s Starship shipping software during your Sage 100 ERP upgrade? What I’ve found is that there are some parts (such as the Starship program) which can (and should) be upgraded in advance. And other parts such as the Starship Link which cannot be upgraded or tested in advance of your go live day.

Here’s what I find:

a. Starship server/workstation program pretty much has to be upgraded independently and in advance of Sage 100 upgrade. I say this because you don’t want to be debugging the latest Starship while also upgrading Sage 100.

b. There’s not really a way to test Starship integration to the new version prior to going live with an upgrade because:

1. You must call Starship/V-Tech to have them turn on the new Sage 100 version (they do it via the web)
2. Once turned on this connector presumably won’t work with the older versions.
3. If you do this before go live for testing you’ll shut down current Starship processing

STEPS:

In advance of Sage 100 upgrade
– upgrade Starship program to latest (info)

On go live
– Upgrade to latest Starship Link (have this handy because V-Tech does NOT post anything publicly on their site)
– Call V-Tech and ask that they enable the new version of Sage 100 link in their system
– Pull this down on the Starship server

1. Exit out of all StarShip clients
2. Run StarShip Server Manager
3. Click Tools > “Check for Registration/Data Updates”
4.. New financial system should be available to select in Starship
