Sage Adds Debbie Hill as Sage MAS Intelligence (SMI) Senior Trainer

February 24, 2012 by Wayne Schulz

Sage have been touring the country talking to consultants and users about their Sage MAS Intelligence product and why the adoption level has not been as fast as they’d like. In response to several requests for better resources they announced that Sage’s Demo Guru Debbie Hill will transition to become a Senior Trainer for Sage Alchemex (aka Sage MAS Intelligence) effective March 5, 2012.

Sage initially announced that Alchemex would be their preferred/recommended solution for replacing the recently retired FRX Financial report writer.

Since that announcement Sage acquired Alchemex (the creator of the BI product) and has been working overtime to convince consultants and customers to adopt SMI as their FRX replacement.

The main issue , according to several consultants, appears to be that SMI was originally slated to be a Business Intelligence report writer versus a full fledged financial statement creator.

Sage just wrapped up a 10 city tour where they talked to users and consultants about SMI – and while they don’t mention how they’ll simplify the complexity of creating financial statements with SMI they have at least taken a good first step in adding some dedicated training resources by moving Debbie Hill to Sage Alchemex.

Full release is below:

Debbie Hill joins Sage Alchemex in North America

It gives me great pleasure to announce that Debbie Hill will be joining the Sage Alchemex team in North America as a Senior Trainer effective as at 5 March 2012. Debbie will be reporting to Ruth Gray who manages our Sage Alchemex learning services team globally. Debbie will be focused on driving adoption of Business Intelligence by addressing the bourgeoning need for skills around our BI modules through focused channel enablement, as well as knowledge and skills transfer horizontally across the SMB and MME business units respectively. Debbie will be a pivotal team member for us in our product roll outs across Sage 50—U.S. Edition, Sage 50—Canadian Edition, Sage 100 ERP, Sage 300 ERP, Sage 500 ERP, Sage PFW ERP and Sage ERP X3.

Debbie has been with Sage for 10 years and has extensive experience in support, sales, pre-sales and training capacity. She has in-depth knowledge of the core Accounting and ERP platforms in Sage North America and has more recently been a champion of our cross sell platforms including Business Intelligence, SPS and CRM.

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Debbie as a new member of our team; we are very excited to create more focus on driving BI education into our business. I would also like to thank Susan Frederick for facilitating a smooth transition for Debbie into our team.

Sage 100 ERP FRx Conversion Utility Assistant Now Available Free

February 17, 2012 by Wayne Schulz

Sage have just posted their Sage 100 ERP FRX Conversion Utility Assistant into their private partner file area. This utility assists users in converting FRX reports to Sage MAS Intelligence 4.5 reports.
Sage MAS Intelligence is Sage’s rebadged (and since acquired) solution from Alchemex. Although marketed as a replacement to the since retired Microsoft FRX Report Writer, SMI is widely viewed as a good Business Intelligence tool and a complex financial report writer.

The release of this conversion tool is meant to ease users in migrating their FRX reports to SMI and remove some of the grumbling people have about complexity of SMI.

The documentation explains in a little more detail what role the FRX Conversion Utility Assistant plays:

The FRx Conversion Assistant is a utility that is designed to aid Sage Business Partners and consultants in transitioning customers from Microsoft® FRx 6.7 to Sage MAS 90/200 Intelligence 4.50 (Only available for Sage MAS 90/200 4.50). As with most conversions this utility does not perform an automatic perfect conversion but rather speeds up the recreation process for existing FRx reports within Sage MAS Intelligence (SMI). As Microsoft FRx and Sage MAS Intelligence provide Financial Reporting in a different manner there is often no direct way to directly convert concepts found within Microsoft FRx to SMI as there will be different mechanisms to handle the same concepts within the two applications.

System requirements (as noted in the conversion guide accompanying the utility):

  • Microsoft FRx 6.7 Service Pack 11 (6.7.11027)
  • Sage ERP MAS 90/200 4.50 ProvideX or MAS 200 SQL 4.50
  • Sage ERP MAS 90/200 Intelligence 4.50 or MAS 200 SQL Intelligence 4.50
  • Active  Manager License
  • Active Report Designer Site License
  • Active Connector Site License

This utility will only work if SMI 4.50 is installed. As Reports from FRx are converted into Report Designer enabled reports within SMI you will need to have obtained a license for the SMI Report Manager and Report Designer components to use this utility. Additionally to cater for consolidated FRx reports, this utility requires an active Connector license to be obtained. If converted reports only draw data from one company then customers can import them against the regular (non‐consolidation) ‘MAS Auto Connect’ connection within SMI.

Sage Partners can download the utility from the Partner File Center

Sage MAS Intelligence (SMI) Free Web Demonstration Schedule

August 22, 2011 by Wayne Schulz

As you know the FRX Financial Reporting tool included with Sage ERP MAS 90 and 200 General Ledger is no longer supported by the software publisher (Microsoft).

Sage have issued prior notices on this which you can review here.

FRX remains compatible with prior versions of Sage ERP MAS 90 and 200. Sage have also indicated it will be compatible with the next version 4.5 slated for release 9/8/11 – though the only assistance Sage can provide is with integration to Sage ERP MAS 90 and MAS 200. All bug fixes and patches have ceased to be readily available for the FRX program.

For new custom financial reporting projects involving more than a few hours of efforts you may wish to evaluate which reporting tool you should use to create new reports.

Moving forward users of FRX will eventually need to migrate to another reporting solution. Sage have provided Sage MAS Intelligence (SMI) as their recommended solution.

SMI is Microsoft Excel based and draws data not only from your financial data but also data from other MAS 90 + MAS 200 data files such as Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, etc.

Sage published this PDF which provides many tips and online links showing how to get started with SMI. Those of you with immediate reporting needs may find it helpful to review the information which goes into greater depth on available resources.

On Wednesday August 24, 2011 Sage will sponsor a free one hour look (30 minute demo and 30 minute question and answer) at creating financial statements using SMI Report Designer. The session starts at 1pm PDT or 4pm EDT. You can sign up here to attend this overview or review the schedule of future SMI web seminars.

Everything you want to know about Sage MAS Intelligence but were too embarrassed to ask

February 17, 2011 by Wayne Schulz

Sage ERP MAS Intelligence is available for different user levels and multiple databases. Report viewer licenses can run existing reports, report manager licenses have the same capabilities as viewer plus allow for creating reports, parameters and templates.

Not confused yet? More powerful capabilities still are available in the report designer which allows report building.

For more information here’s an updated explanation from Sage of what’s included in the “Free” version of Sage MAS Intelligence as well as what you have to pay for.
