VMWare, XenApp, Virtual PC 2007, Terminal Services and Hyper-V now officially supported for Sage MAS 90, 200 and 500

July 24, 2009 by Wayne Schulz

Sage Software has provided some additional information on how their Sage MAS 90, 200 and 500 product are now officially supported on several virtual platforms.

A virtual platform is a way that computer users might for example run Microsoft Windows while also using an Apple MacBook Pro. These virtual software platforms have evolved from the early days where they were typically very difficult to get working reliably to present day where many companies are able to use virtual computers quite successfully.

We use VMWare internally to run Sage MAS 90 on an Apple MacBook Pro as outlined in this post from May 2008.

We also have several clients using similar technology including one that integrates their iMac computer into the Windows network while running Sage MAS 90.

MAPADOC EDI for Sage MAS 90 and 200 gets updated and discounted 15%

October 8, 2008 by Wayne Schulz

Mapadoc EDI for Sage MAS 90 and 200 has received some updates that will translate (pun intended) to greater ease of use and benefits for those customers who are using this EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) solution to integrate with their Sage MAS 90 and 200 accounting package.

EDI is a means by which different companies exchange data such as shipment notifications, invoices and purchase orders. It’s generally implemented only when a larger customer or supplier requires it. There are several sources for EDIT add-ons for Sage MAS 90 and 200. SWK Technologies is the developer of MAPADOC which is one EDI solution used by many Sage MAS 90 and 200 companies.

The release of a new Mapadoc EDI document for Trading Partner PO changes means that users no longer have to manually modify Sales Orders.

Changes to items such as ship date, quantity and/or unit price, additions of new lines, deletions of existing line or entire orders can now be managed with the new 860 Purchase Order Change.

MAPADOC Fall 2008 Promotions

15% off list price on new documents (expires October 31, 2008) and applies to the following:

  • Carrier Bill of Lading (211)
  • Change Order Processing (860)
  • Product Resale Report (867)

Sage MAS 90 on a MacBook Pro? Are You Nuts?!

May 16, 2008 by Wayne Schulz

A few people noticed that while I was at Sage Software’s Insights 2008 conference that the laptop I used was a MacBook Pro. This has brought forth the question of:

“Do you run MAS90 on that thing?“

.The answer is yes. I use VMWARE Fusions which creates a virtual Windows XP box on my desktop. From within VMWARE I can run any Windows XP compatible application. Granted that I don’t run MAS90 in a production environment on my MacBook Pro (my use is limited to support questions and testing). I have a stray client or two that runs older MAS 90 versions on a MacBook with no reported issues.

Of course the Apple Leopard OS includes a free utility called BootCamp which will allow you to dual boot either Apple or Windows OS. The issue with BootCamp is that it’s an either/or boot. In order to swap operating system usage you must reboot your Mac.

The most common way around this is to use virtualization software (such as VMWARE or Parallels) that create a large partition on your Mac and supports running multiple operating systems simultaneously.

Before you jump and buy a Mac, realize that Sage Software does NOT support Sage MAS 90 on any platform other than what is in their official supported platforms matrix.

The two most common programs for running Mac and Windows on the same hardware are Parallels and VMWARE Fusion. See the links below for more information. Both programs are available for under $100. You will need to supply a copy of the OS. For that purpose I strongly recommend obtaining a membership in Microsoft Technet which provides for evaluation licenses for the different Microsoft operating systems (Technet is a $349 initial subscription and $249 renewal).

Tip: Another way to run MAS 90 or MAS 200 on a Mac platform is via Citrix or Terminal Server.
