How To Optimize Sage 100 ERP For Virtual Servers

May 22, 2013 by Wayne Schulz

The question of how to optimize Sage 100 ERP for virtual environments has recently come up with several customers as well as in our 90 Minds private discussion area.

In short we’ve observed that some customers virtualize their servers and shortly thereafter experience random bouts of extreme slowdowns with Sage 100 ERP.

The solution appears to be for the system running Sage 100 ERP to have adequate processors AND cores allocated. In some cases the resolution was to add to the number of cores available which significantly improve speeds.

MAS90 and MAS200 Virtualization Compatibility Guide – March 2011

If you’re wondering what virtualization products (VMWare Server, VMWare Workstation, Terminal Services, Hyper-V, Virtual PC) are supported with Sage ERP MAS 90 and MAS 200 then wonder no longer.

Sage this month (March 2011) have published a one page chart showing exactly which virtual computing software environments are compatible with which versions of Sage ERP MAS 90 and MAS 200.

Based on the chart below you’ll definitely want to be on version 4.3 or higher to ensure compatibility with the latest virtual environments.

MAS 90 & MAS 200 Virtualization Guide Published

July 29, 2009 by Wayne Schulz

Virtualization allows you to allocate hardware resources among multiple virtual environments running on the same machine. Application virtualization is the use of software to allow multiple application images (such as Sage MAS) to run on the same hardware at the same time.

Sage has just issued their officially supported Virtualization configurations. This one page document (copy below for your convenience – be sure to check for updates as they become available) outlines the various virtualization platforms that may now be used to run both MAS 90 and MAS 200.

Benefits of Server Virtualization:

•Provision additional servers without investing in new hardware
•Run multiple operating systems and applications on the same physical server
•Increase the CPU utilization of an underutilized physical server by running multiple virtual environments
•Move virtual machines from one physical server to another without re-configuration
•Capture the entire state of a virtual machine and roll back to that configuration easily

Benefits of Workstation virtualization:

•Run multiple virtual machines on a single PC
•Quickly provision, deploy and reconfigure physical machines
•Run multiple operating systems and applications on a single PC
•Eliminate risk by creating isolated testing environment
•Built-in Snapshots and easy Restore capabilities

Sage MAS 90 on a MacBook Pro? Are You Nuts?!

May 16, 2008 by Wayne Schulz

A few people noticed that while I was at Sage Software’s Insights 2008 conference that the laptop I used was a MacBook Pro. This has brought forth the question of:

“Do you run MAS90 on that thing?“

.The answer is yes. I use VMWARE Fusions which creates a virtual Windows XP box on my desktop. From within VMWARE I can run any Windows XP compatible application. Granted that I don’t run MAS90 in a production environment on my MacBook Pro (my use is limited to support questions and testing). I have a stray client or two that runs older MAS 90 versions on a MacBook with no reported issues.

Of course the Apple Leopard OS includes a free utility called BootCamp which will allow you to dual boot either Apple or Windows OS. The issue with BootCamp is that it’s an either/or boot. In order to swap operating system usage you must reboot your Mac.

The most common way around this is to use virtualization software (such as VMWARE or Parallels) that create a large partition on your Mac and supports running multiple operating systems simultaneously.

Before you jump and buy a Mac, realize that Sage Software does NOT support Sage MAS 90 on any platform other than what is in their official supported platforms matrix.

The two most common programs for running Mac and Windows on the same hardware are Parallels and VMWARE Fusion. See the links below for more information. Both programs are available for under $100. You will need to supply a copy of the OS. For that purpose I strongly recommend obtaining a membership in Microsoft Technet which provides for evaluation licenses for the different Microsoft operating systems (Technet is a $349 initial subscription and $249 renewal).

Tip: Another way to run MAS 90 or MAS 200 on a Mac platform is via Citrix or Terminal Server.
