Twhirl beta makes Twitter a bonafide business tool

January 25, 2009 by Wayne Schulz

Have you heard of the Twitter micro-blogging service? It’s a handy way to keep in touch with peers and friends. The primary use of Twitter is to publish short (maximum 140 character) messages that answer the question “what are you doing”.

Naturally the messages on Twitter have evolved to the point where people now ask questions such as “does anyone know how to ____”. These questions cover a huge range of topics and can be a perfect opportunity for your company to interact with a potential customer.

There’s a new software beta from Seeismic that adds some very helpful tools that will let you use Twitter without pulling the hair out of your head.

By default Twitter’s web client shows you messages addressed only to your name and only when that name is right at the beginning of the message.

Twhirl (beta) solves this problem by now including all mentions of your name in the default Twitter feed.

Using Twhirl you can now also create searches for keywords. For example my keywords are “mas90”, “sage sofwtare”, and “blackberry”. These keyword searches can be viewed individually within the software or you can have the show up in your main Twitter feed where they are most likely to be noticed.

Finally, the new Twhirl program integrates with a service called Ping.fm which lets you update all of your social media sites (Facebook, LinkedIn, Friendfeed, etc) from one location. So now instead of having to visit multiple web sites to update your status you can do it all automatically from within Twhirl.

If you’ve looked at Twitter before and found it too confusing, this may be a perfect time to take another look. Twhirl is beta so you must receive an invitation (request here) to get the download link.  However it’s well worth the time to request and install this software because it makes Twitter use even easier.

Sage MAS 90 and MAS 200 Winter 2009 Promotions

January 19, 2009 by Wayne Schulz

The latest pricing promotions for Sage MAS 90 and MAS 200 have been released by Sage Software. In order to qualify for any of these promotions your order must be placed prior to March 31, 2009.

Promotions are always applied to the product portion of any software costs and not against the recurring software maintenance.

In order to participate in these promotions (and to purchase any new modules or product licenses), a current Sage Basic Software Maintenance Plan is required.

Noteworthy MAS90 & MAS200 Promotions

I’ve included a complete listing of all promotions as distributed by Sage Software earlier this month.

Some of the more noteworthy promotions are:

  • Reinstatement for lapsed maintenance at 40% off provided you enroll on EasyPay (this is where Sage bills your credit card monthly for the maintenance costs)
  • Migrate to Extended Enterprise Suite and save 40% off the cost of coming current
  • Receive a free copy of Sage Credit Card module for enrolling with Sage Payment Solutions
  • Participate in the Sage Credit Card Promo and also be eligible to buy Business Alerts for $895 (plus maintenance) and the ACH Electronic Payments (AP-1063) and AP Paperless Stubs (AP-1095) for ony $1,500 (plus maintenance).

Recommendations

New purchasers of Sage MAS 90 or MAS 200 should look no farther than the Extended Enterprise Suite. This bundle includes:

  • Library Master
  • Business Insights
  • Paperless Office
  • General Ledger
  • Accounts Receivable
  • Accounts Payable
  • Customer Relationship Management (aka SageCRM 6.2)
  • Inventory Management
  • Sales Order
  • Purchase Order
  • Return Merchandise Authorization
  • Bill of Materials
  • Bank Reconciliation
  • Visual Integrator
  • Custom Office
  • FRX & Crystal Reports
  • Fixed Assets (FAS)
  • Federal & State eFiling
  • Credit Card Processing by Sage Payment Solutions

We are  seeing extremely aggressive upgrade pricing for existing users of Sage MAS 90 and 200 that starts at about $500 per user (minimum 5 users) to upgrade from standard MAS 90 to EES (Extended Enterprise Suite). In most instances you should strongly consider EES even if all you need is an extra module or two.

Sage Software is currently running a promotion with EES that gives you 2 extra users for every 5 you purchase.

Below is the official promotional sheet distributed this quarter that goes into greater detail about the savings that are being offered.

eCard 101 courtesy of Sage

December 23, 2008 by Wayne Schulz

Congratulations to Sage Software’s Northeast Team for sending an eCard that I actually enjoyed receiving.

As they did last year, key members of the Northeast team at Sage posed in front of a festive holiday tree.

I deal almost exclusively by phone with these four people. People like to do business with people.

I don’t do business with Sage — I do business with these people AT Sage. Forming a connection with people also by default forms a connection with the company.

Sending out something as simple as a card that depicts the people we deal with every day is a great idea.

More companies should do this.

About an hour after I received my card another top Sage Business Partner emailed me “This was actually a nice self generated idea….it shows a tinge of entrepreneurism still lives.”

Kudos to Sage and specifically Michael, Hellene, Susie and Eddie for creating what I consider to be the most effective eCard that I’ve received in 2008.

BlackBerry Storm review summaries

November 19, 2008 by Wayne Schulz

Thinking of getting a new BlackBerry Storm when it’s released on Friday? The first reviews are starting to trickle in with the Wall Street Journal posting the first official review.

Unfortunately Walt Mossberg of the WSJ spends a large amount of time reminding us of why the BlackBerry Storm is different from all other BlackBerry’s (anyone not know the answer here — hint – look at the picture and try to find a keyboard).

Overall he pronounces is faster on high speed cellular data than the iPhone but couldn’t test it on Wi-Fi — because the BlackBerry Storm lacks any Wi-Fi capabilities. Unfortunately he also doesn’t say much about the multimedia capabilities of the phone (only one sentence).

As more reviews are released, I’ll compile them below so you can access them easily.

Note: Most reviews of the BlackBerry Storm are under embargo meaning they cannot be released online until a date set by Verizon. As soon as we spot sites posting their reviews (which should be soon given that the Wall Street Journal already has published) we’ll be linking them below.

Wall Street Journal Reviews BlackBerry Storm

Summary: Cursory review that focuses on reminding anyone living under a rock the past year that the BlackBerry Storm is different from prior BlackBerryies because it has no keyboard. There’s no analysis (save for one sentence) of multi-media capabilities or any discussion of APPS that are unique to this new touch device.

Rating: Duh.
