Sage 100 Slow After Microsoft Windows Update? Try This

April 28, 2018 by Wayne Schulz

Several users of Sage 100 and Sage 100cloud have reported Sage100 slowdowns shortly after applying a Microsoft Windows system update. This doesn’t appear to impact all users which may be due to not everyone applying Windows updates at the same pace.

The issue has been reported by several users on the Sage City community beginning in June 2017 and described as:

Updated a few machines to 1703 and had some issues with Sage100 2016 being laggy. Windows would take 5-10 seconds to close or open. I then rolled back to the previous build and all was fine again.

Until recently the primary way many users dealt with this slowdown was to roll back the Windows update. Users report that there is a 10-day window within which to revert to the prior Windows version.

Now another potential solution has appeared and several users say this has helped to speed up their workstation running Sage 100 or Sage 100 cloud.

From the website Tenforums:

…here is how to fix it:

1, Hit start menu and type “Defender”, it should bring up “Windows Defender settings” entry, so open it.

2, Another juicy part – if you use another AV software, like for example in my case – ESET, then you would naturally assume everything Defender related is disabled, and you would be wrong. If you use Defender, you will be brought to the Windows Defender Security Center straight away, but if you don’t, you will end up on a Settings page saying that Windows Defender is not available because it’s turned off. Click “Turn on Windows Defender Antivirus” – don’t worry, your AV software will disable it again straight away.

3, Once you are in Windows Defender Security Center, Click App & browser control button

4, Scroll all the way down, to Exploit protection, and click Exploit protection settings text

5, Once on Exploit protection page, set Control flow guard (CFG) to OFF.

6, It will prompt you to restart your PC

7, After the restart, enjoy your smooth Windows experience again

Although this may not work in every case – it’s worth trying to see if you can bring an impacted workstation back to full speed. One user on the Sage City forum reports that the Spring Creators Update (due April 2018) may cure this slow speed issue without the need to perform the fix noted above.

Open File Security Warning When Running Sage 100 ERP

November 6, 2013 by Wayne Schulz

In some cases you may notice that shortly after installing Sage 100 to a workstation that you see a constant warning each time you click to open another menu within Sage.

The warning generally will be “Open File – Security Warning”.

And while you can click to close and ignore the error – it can get tiring having to close so many windows. Here’s one way that I’ve found to fix the issue:

First, be sure you have a backup of all relevant system files. We are not responsible for changes made to your operating system:

  1. Click Windows Start. Click Run. Type gpedit.msc and press ENTER.
  2. Expand Local Computer Policy, User Configuration, Administrative Templates, Windows Components, and Attachment Manager.
  3. Right-click Default risk level for file attachments. Click Properties.
  4. Click Enabled.
  5. Right-click Inclusion list for low file types. Click Properties.
  6. Click Enabled.
  7. In the Specify low risk inclusions field, type pvxwin32.exe.
  8. Click OK.

This information relates to Sage 100 ERP (formerly Sage ERP MAS 90 and MAS 200) and should work for all versions of Sage 100 – including Standard, Advanced and Premium.

Microsoft May Target 30,000 Customers In Software Asset Management (SAM) Engagement

December 12, 2012 by Wayne Schulz

Are you a Microsoft Enterprise license customer? If so you may find Microsoft knocking on your door to help you determined the ROI of your software licenses.

At least that is Microsoft’s explanation.

The  2012 Software Pricing and Licensing Survey by IDC indicates that 51 percent of enterprise customers may be subject to compliance reviews – aka software license audits meant to uncover violations of licensing and in turn elicit additional compensation.

According to a story today in The Register , Microsoft may have set a goal of targeting  30,000 companies to be audited over the next two years.

Microsoft Windows XP Support Expiration Date of April 8, 2014 Is Less Than 500 Days Away

November 26, 2012 by Wayne Schulz

April 8, 2014 is the expiration date on Microsoft XP — aka the last day (as of now) that you’ll be able to get support for the operating system that many companies have standardized on for the desktop.

The questions may become – will Microsoft extend the deadline, will Windows 8 become the new standard or will companies just ignore this altogether?

Retirement deadline for Microsoft’s longest-lived OS is ‘ticking time bomb,’ says migration firm

Windows 8 Upgrade: First Thoughts

October 28, 2012 by Wayne Schulz

Anyone load Windows 8 yet? I spent a couple hours loading the upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8. Pretty interesting change. I was very surprised that I did not have many problems navigating. Admittedly I did not try to use it in a network environment (home vs office are two very different work situations).

I like (and hope they continuously improve) the Metro (modern) UI which displays what are essentially a bunch of live tile widgets.

My concerns are:

a. Microsoft will leverage their monopoly to be sure their native apps are the primary ones which work well on Windows 8

b. The settings are going to be tough for people to get their arms around.

c. I’m not sure that I am sold on touch and laptops but I could be persuaded

d. The Microsoft Surface — especially Surface RT v Pro are two very different animals (one only runs Windows 8 apps the other full Windows apps) and I think will be a little to complex to explain to most users. I can see the RT going away quickly in favor of full Window 8 tablets (which honestly are just compact laptops by my view).

I did not put Sage 100 through any type of rigorous testing – other than to see if it started and I could log in. There is a separate desktop that looks just like Windows 7 (hidden behind Metro UI) which is pretty easy to start up and use.

Time will tell but I was more favorably impressed than I though I would be.
